Testing was carried out at Charlestown, Ardee, Co. Louth, in advance of the development of a dwelling-house, garage, septic tank and percolation area and two rainwater soak pits. The site of the proposed development is 40m west of a church site (SMR 14:18(01)) and a holy well site (SMR 14:18(02)). The site occupies an area of 21102. A mechanical digger using a three-foot bucket excavated four test-trenches to the natural subsoils. The investigation revealed that natural subsoil lay close to the present ground surface at an average depth of c. 0.4m. The ground appears not to have been previously disturbed. There was one feature noted in Trenches 1 and 2, probably a continuation of the one feature, possibly an old drainage ditch or boundary, running through both trenches. No other archaeological features or finds were noted.
