Three test-trenches were excavated in advance of a renovation project at these premises in Tholsel Street. The site lies within a designated zone of archaeological potential. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted, but, at a depth of c. 1.8m, a sand deposit containing water-rolled stones formed the base of the trenches. This deposit suggested that the area had once formed part of the harbour shore but had been reclaimed by dumping material to raise the ground level.
