The proposed development is located within the historic town of Ardee. The site is situated on the southern side of Ash Walk, a laneway on the western side of Market Street and one of the original streets of the Anglo-Norman town that led to Ash Walk Gate. Previously, the site had been used as a carpark.
An assessment was undertaken as part of a planning application. A number of trenches were excavated to subsoil, but no archaeological remains were uncovered. The site appeared to have had much of the topsoil removed prior to its use as a carpark. No significant archaeological remains survive at this site.
