Test-trenches were excavated before the construction of 26 dwellings in Knockane, Newcastle West. The site is located on the perimeter of the suburbs of the historic town c. 1km south of the town square. The north-western edge of the development site borders the zone of archaeological potential centred around an enclosure, SMR 36:68.
Twenty trenches were excavated by mechanical excavator, sixteen positioned on the footprint of the foundations of the houses, while the remaining four were along the route of the roadway. No archaeological layers or artefacts were recorded in any of the trenches.
