Visual inspection and magnetometry survey by hand-held metal detection of a 100m stretch of the River Shannon, in Athlunkard and Corbally townlands (immediately upstream of Athlunkard Bridge), took place prior to the insertion of a 1000mm interceptor pipeline. Diver assessment extended 35m upstream and 35m downstream of the anticipated 30m-wide impact corridor. Detailed descriptions were made of riverbed topography and bottom composition and, where possible, metal detector hits were examined and logged. No archaeologically significant material was observed.
