Monitoring of trenching/ditching associated with the construction of the Barnakyle to Coonagh West gas pipeline continued from the beginning of January until 28 February 2003. A decision was made to relocate the site of the proposed above-ground installation at Coonagh West, away from the grounds of Shannon Rugby Club to a field c. 150m to the east. This involved digging along the edge of the road to Coonagh village. No archaeological material was revealed in the course of this work.
The final element of trenching concerned the rerouting of the Barnakyle River. This came about when the base of the river was breached during tunnelling work. Continued digging would have made the problem worse, so part of the river was rerouted to recommence tunnelling at a new location. This involved the digging of a D-shaped loop up to 5m wide by up to 5m deep on the northern side of the river, in Cloghkeating townland. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during this work.
