The development site is located in the townland of Cloonreask, to the west of the zone of archaeological potential for Askeaton (SMR 11:92). Planning permission was granted for an extension to an existing house development. An assessment, including the excavation of test-trenches, was undertaken in the northern portion of the site. The area is shown as open ground on the first-edition OS map.
Eight trenches were excavated on the footprint of the foundations of house sites and access roads. The same stratigraphic horizons were recorded in all trenches. Topsoil overlay red-brown sandy loam, which overlay limestone bedrock. The level of the limestone bedrock was higher in the eastern portion of the site. There was no soil cover in places. No archaeological features or artefacts were recorded in any of the trenches.
