A one-acre triangular field, near a standing stone, was tested by two 2m-wide trenches, 75m and 78m long. Topsoil, 0.1–0.15m deep, overlay a waterlogged, sticky, heavily leached, stony, impermeable grey soil. Apart from two land drains, and a few modern finds of crockery, slate and glass, there was no archaeology in the trenches.
