Following testing in 2002 of a 500m length of the N25 Waterford Bypass, four potential sites were investigated in 2003. The excavations were conducted over 21 weeks and included further testing on a minor road realignment. The work was funded by the NRA and Waterford Corporation.
The main site (Killaspy 1) comprised a large and complicated burnt mound, probably prehistoric, reused as the site of a smithy. Two further burnt mounds were located on the nearby minor road realignment.
Also investigated were the remains of 17th-century fields (Killaspy 2), a small area of burning of little archaeological significance (Killaspy 3) and a small isolated patch of burnt-mound activity (Killaspy 4).
