Pre-development testing was carried out on this site. Three trenches were dug and a clay floor interpreted as being from the house belonging to a Mr Sandbeach, depicted on a map of 1710, was found, along with the wall foundations of a subsequent development of cottages shown on the first-edition OS map of 1839. The site lies close to the line of the town defences, near the location of the stone gatehouse at the western end of the town’s main street.
