An assessment was undertaken in support of an application to construct a housing scheme at Cloghabrody, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. The proposed development area was subjected to topographic and photographic surveys, a geophysical survey and testing.
The proposed development site is located immediately north-east of Thomastown, outside the zone of archaeological potential for the town. A D-shaped enclosure located at the centre of the proposed development will be excluded from the development. Evidence was recovered from the geophysical survey for two concentric buried ditches surrounding the monument. Test-trenches were located to investigate areas of higher potential as indicated by the geophysical survey, with additional trenches excavated in blank areas as a control. No evidence was identified for significant archaeological features outside the ditches of the ringfort.
