Testing was undertaken at a proposed development area at Butler’s Row/Offaly Street, Athy, Co. Kildare. The site is located on the eastern side of the town and outside the postulated southern line of the town wall.
The development area was subjected to extensive ground reduction works in the past, resulting in the present surface being up to c. 1.5m below that of adjacent properties to the north, east and south. The site was subsequently used as a surface carpark and all the test-trenches uncovered the subsoil directly below the existing tarmacadam surface. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
