Athy is a medieval town designated as a zone of archaeological potential. Test-trenches were excavated on either side of the River Barrow in the area of proposed bridge abutments associated with a project to build a relief street within the town. Trenches were excavated, to a maximum depth of c. 2.75m, through recent deposits onto what were thought to be natural gravels. No archaeological artefacts or features were uncovered in the course of the testing.
