Monitoring along the southern section of the Newbridge to Athgarvan Water Improvement Scheme was carried out between October and December 2003. The proposed route was considered to be in an area of archaeological potential. A test excavation, 100m long and 1m wide, had been carried out by Teresa Bolger on the site of a possible cemetery adjacent to the proposed pipeline in 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 598, 01E0450). No archaeological material was uncovered during this investigation.
Further work on the extension of the northern section of the pipeline to Newbridge—a length of some 900m—has been postponed until 2004, to allow the repair and provision of footpaths and other services along the remainder of the route. Intermittent monitoring has been recommended for the remainder of the route. No material or features of archaeological significance came to light in the course of monitoring the southern section.
