Testing was undertaken at a development site at 59–60 Leinster Street, Athy, Co. Kildare. The site is on the eastern side of the River Barrow, outside the line of the town wall but within the zone of archaeological potential.
Demolition and general ground clearance works at the site were completed prior to the appointment of an archaeologist. These resulted in the entire ground surface being reduced by up to 0.6m. Testing confirmed that a light-brown gravelly clay layer, exposed by such reductions, represented the underlying ‘natural’ subsoil. Trial-trenching consisted of the machine excavation of four trenches within the confines of the development area. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
