Testing at a development site in Killinagh, Co. Kildare, took place from 3 to 6 November 2003. The site is a large field to the south of the village of Clogharinka and is just to the north of the zone of archaeological potential surrounding the site of a castle (SMR 3:4). Killinagh House now stands on the site of the castle.
Eight trenches were excavated across the proposed footprint of the development. The stratigraphy across the site was relatively uniform throughout. Shattered bedrock was noted below the topsoil in the north-west corner of the site, which corresponds to the highest point within the development. Along the north-western end of Trenches 2–4 a thin layer of topsoil overlay very compact white/orange silty clay.
Across the majority of the site, mid-brown silty clay topsoil overlay orange/brown silty clay subsoil which contained occasional to frequent weathered stones. A shallow ridge which ran north-east/south-west across the eastern half of the site was reflected in the stratigraphy where it crossed the trenches. The subsoil became lighter in colour and more frequent stones were noted. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in any of the trenches.
