Centre-line and offset testing along the route of the proposed N7 Naas Road Widening and Interchanges Scheme, Contract 2, was carried out in August and October 2003. Contract 2 is approximately 5.1km in length and concerns the northern end of the proposed scheme between the townlands of Kill and Hutton Read/Castlewarden.
There are no sites listed in the RMP within the area of land-take. Within the corridor, seven areas of archaeological potential were highlighted by desk-based assessments and walkover surveys. These were to be tested under individual licences, concurrent with the centre-line testing. A linear trench with offsets spaced at 25m intervals on each side was excavated across all areas of land-take in an attempt to define areas of previously unrecognised potential. In the area of archaeological potential north of Kill Hill (SMR 20:1), the offset trenches were spaced at 10m intervals. Testing was carried out by two machines.
Four sites to the south and one north of the dual carriageway were identified as being of archaeological interest and were resolved under individual licences. Of these, four were in Kill Hill townland (No. 934, 03E1569; No. 933, 03E1570; No. 935, 03E1571; and No. 936, 03E1573 below) and one was in Blackchurch, a linear feature and associated pits from which some finds of worked flint were recovered. The site will be excavated in 2004.
