An aerial survey in advance of the M7 Heath–Mayfield Motorway Scheme revealed a circular cropmark in a flat, low-lying, marshy field near Monasterevin Bog. As it lay directly on the line of the proposed road, a test excavation was carried out. Two trenches, 50m long by 2m wide, in a cruciform arrangement, were excavated by machine. These showed that the area consisted of a layer of peat, on average 0.5m thick, overlying white to grey marl. There were no traces of human activity.
