Monitoring of topsoil-stripping in advance of the construction of a residential development took place in the townland of Palmerstown, Co. Kildare, in December 2002. The site is located in the village of Johnstown, near to church ruins and a graveyard (SMR 19:14).
The landscape is low-lying and, during the monitoring programme, the presence of buried peat was identified, increasing the possibility of archaeological features surviving. Monitoring was therefore extended to include the excavation of service trenches and house foundations.
During monitoring of the house foundations and service trenches, which continued into 2003, no features of archaeological significance were identified.
