The site for the proposed development at Jigginstown, Naas, was, until recently, the kennels and stables for the Kildare Hunt. It is proposed that the development will consist of the partial demolition of existing 19th-century buildings and the construction of c. 45 apartments. Located 150m east of the development site is Jigginstown Castle and grounds (SMR 19–33(01–03)). A Hall Castle (SMR 19:32) is located 50m to the east of the castle. A tower-house known as Castle Rag (SMR 19:34) is located c. 50m east of the proposed development. Jigginstown Villa, a house of 18th-century or earlier date, is located to the south of the entrance gate of the development site.
The Kildare Hunt stable and kennel complex comprises two main collections of buildings: the dwelling and stables, and the kennels. Eight test-trenches were opened by mechanical excavator. All were excavated to a depth of 0.6–1.2m and encountered only topsoil and natural sediments. A large, modern animal grave was noted within Trench 5.
Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2002, the summary of this work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
