Testing was undertaken at Site 10 from 29 September to 1 October as part of Contract 1 of the N7 Naas Road Widening and Interchanges Scheme. The site was identified as a result of a pre-development geophysical survey of the scheme carried out by Earthsound Ltd in August 2003. Site 10 was recognised as an area of potential archaeological significance, as possible earthworks were noted within the area of land-take in the EIS.
Possible earthworks comprising curvilinear and linear banks and ditches were recorded over almost half of the northern part of the field during walkover surveys carried out in advance of the geophysical survey. The geophysical survey revealed possible extensive archaeological deposits in six areas within the area of land-take. Thirty-one trenches were excavated to natural across the site. In addition, centre-line and offset trenches were excavated. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded. A high incidence of iron panning, as well some modern field drainage features, may explain the geophysical survey results.
