Testing was undertaken at a development site located at Prosperous Road and Millicent Road, Clane, within the zone of archaeological potential for Clane. It is proposed to construct a discount foodstore, with associated car-parking, on the eastern portion of the site. The remainder of the site will consist of an apartment and retail development.
Testing was undertaken across the entire site. Eighteen trenches were excavated. No features of archaeological interest were uncovered during the testing process. However, a total of 115 sherds of pottery were recovered from the topsoil. In addition, two clay-pipe stems and a clay-pipe bowl were also recovered. All the artefacts were recovered from those trenches located to the north of an open drain (the Butterstream) which runs through the site. The pottery assemblage was analysed by Clare McCutcheon, who noted that it was mostly of medieval date, consisting of Leinster cooking ware, Dublin-type ware, Dublin-type fineware and Dublin-type cooking ware. The post-medieval pottery consisted of possible Merida-type, black-glazed ware, glazed red earthenware and stoneware.
