Testing was carried out on the site of a proposed development at Church Road, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, on 20 May 2003 prior to the construction of a bungalow. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for Celbridge (SMR 11:12) and south-east of St Mochua’s Church (SMR 11:12(04, 05)), which is a medieval church on the site of a possibly Early Christian foundation.
Three trenches were inserted by machine. The overall impression from the stratigraphy within the trenches was that levels had been significantly reduced over the entire area of the site. Stratigraphy consisted of approximately 0.1–0.2m of topsoil, which lay directly upon the upper bedrock strata. Local memory indicated that the area was once quarried and this may explain the absence of a subsoil layer. A stone culvert was identified in Trench 3 at a distance of 7m from the street-side boundary of the site. There were no archaeological deposits or artefacts encountered on the site.
