Testing was undertaken at a proposed development area at the former Sisters of Mercy convent lands in Athy, Co. Kildare. The site is on the eastern side of the town and partially bounded by Stanhope Street, Stanhope Place and Convent View. Part of the southern half of the site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Athy and a section of the southern boundary to the site is located along the northern side of Stanhope Place. The postulated line of the town wall is located along the southern side of Stanhope Place, as is the site of a murage tower, Black Castle. There are no extant remains of such features.
Eight test-trenches were excavated by machine at a number of garden/greenfield areas across the site. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
