Testing was undertaken in an area to the rear of 28 Duke Street, Athy, Co. Kildare. The site is located on the west side of the River Barrow and it is speculated that the western boundary wall to the site was built along the line of the medieval town wall. However, there are no extant remains of the latter and much of the present boundary is formed by a modern concrete wall.
Machine excavation of four trenches took place within the confines of the development area. The testing revealed a c. 0.5m layer of rubble overlying a moderately compact gravelly clay layer. This latter material, which was investigated to a depth of c. 0.5m, is similar to that uncovered in the adjacent site to the east (Excavations 1995, No. 141, 95E0171; Excavations 1996, No. 173, 95E0169 ext.; and Excavations 2002, No. 861). No features or artefacts of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of testing.
