Excavation work this year concentrated on the East Steps to the monastery. Excavation of the subrectangular building, which commenced in 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 800), was completed. The building, c. 5m by 2.5m, had partially fallen away into the sea, but enough stratigraphy remained in situ in order to establish that the building appears to have been occupied in the Early Christian period and was reused by Irish Lights. Samples for 14C dating were taken, as the only find was a small cross slab from beneath the threshold of the building.
