Test-trenches were excavated on the footprint of a single-house development at Gortnagane, Rathmore, as part of an assessment of the potential impact of the development on the nearby archaeological complex known as ‘The City’ (Cathair Crobh Dearg), SMR 68:22, which comprises eight archaeological elements: a cashel, an ogham stone, a cross-inscribed stone, a penitential station/cairn, a possible cashel, a holy well, a well and a possible mound. Much folklore, myth and tradition is associated with the site and the Pap Mountains, on whose lower slopes The City is situated.
An H-shaped trench was excavated on the footprint of the proposed house site. The field in which it is located has been reclaimed in recent years. Below the topsoil was a mixed layer of grey and mid-yellow/brown silty sand, formed due to the disturbance caused when the field was reclaimed. The subsoil consisted of mid-yellow/brown silty sand with frequent pebbles and stones. No archaeological stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded within the test-trench.
