Test-trenches were excavated in advance of the development of a single dwelling with associated services at Garrane East, Killorglin. The site falls within the zone of archaeological potential for a possible (children’s) burial ground (SMR 56:47), and a rath and associated souterrain (SMR 56:7) are located c. 70m to the south-east.
The field boundaries in this area were changed significantly between the first- and second-edition OS maps and are now being changed again, with development site boundaries being removed and replaced a short distance away. This change in field boundaries has had a drastic effect on SMR 56:47, which is located immediately east of the eastern boundary of the proposed site.
Test excavations were carried out in four areas of the proposed development site. No archaeological features were revealed.
