Six test-trenches were excavated in advance of the construction of a house near the possible site of a souterrain at Garranearagh, Caherciveen. The identification of this site was based on local information and there is no visible trace of it. The development site slopes sharply downwards from east to west and the development will involve scarping into the hillside to form a level building area. The topsoil averaged 0.3m deep and overlay the natural oxidised reddish-brown boulder clay. This soil was intermixed with the underlying fractured shale bedrock material. No evidence was uncovered for the souterrain or any other archaeological features. The surrounding area was inspected and no trace of the souterrain was recorded.
