Test-trenches were excavated in advance of a singlehouse development c. 2km west of Castlecove village on the south-eastern side of the Iveragh Peninsula. The north-eastern boundary of the site is also the border of the zone of archaeological potential centred around the ecclesiastical remains of Kilcrohane Church (SMR 106:32), while the stream that runs down along the far side of this boundary is that which emerges from a holy well (SMR 106:32(03)) 100m to the north-east. There are no known archaeological monuments identified for the proposed development site itself; however, the archaeological complex, which consists primarily of a medieval church and graveyard, to the rear of which is a holy well associated with a holy tree (SMR 106:32(01–04)), is located 60m to the north-east.
Four trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. They were located in the areas for the septic tank, the driveway and on the foundations for the house. There were no archaeological features or artefacts recorded.
