Monitoring of the Ballyheigue sewerage scheme was undertaken on behalf of Kerry County Council. The main elements of the scheme are construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Dromatoor townland to the west of Ballyheigue, the construction of two pumping stations in Buncurrig townland to the south of Ballyheigue and the excavation of trenches to lay sewerage pipes, outfall pipes, etc., in the townlands of Ballyheigue, Buncurrig, Dirtane, Dromatoor and Dromgower. Monitoring of all ground-disturbance works associated with the scheme was undertaken. Archaeological material was encountered and subsequently excavated in the townlands of Dromatoor (Excavations 2001, No. 563, 01E1084) and by Simon Ó Faoláin in Dirtane (Excavations 2002, No. 787, 02E0677). Testing was undertaken on the route of the sewerage pipeline in the townland of Dirtane (Excavations 2001, No. 545, 01E1037) in proximity to a ringfort and souterrain. All phases of work are now complete.
