A small area was excavated in the north-west quarter of the stone oratory at the west side of the island in September 2003, to answer a number of questions and to allow conservation work to proceed on the north and west walls of the oratory. Several human burials pre-dating the oratory were uncovered. Some were recorded but not removed by the previous excavator of the site, M.J. O’Kelly. They will be used to provide a terminus post quem for the stone oratory, which was originally excavated before 14C dating was possible in Ireland.
