Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out along the length of the N21 Ballycarty–Tralee Road Improvement Scheme. This was in addition to the excavation of test-trenches undertaken on potential archaeological sites identified by geophysical testing. The N21 Road Improvement Scheme extended through the townlands of Ballingowan, Ballycarty, Ballyseedy, Caherbreagh, Curraghleha East and Manor East on the northern side of the existing N21.
Mid-brown topsoil was removed to an average depth of 0.3m onto mid-orange clay subsoil with occasional patches of high bedrock. Two areas of archaeology were recorded in the townland of Ballingowan. The first was an isolated pit. A pit with two stake-holes on either side was uncovered c. 130m east of the first pit. Both areas of archaeology were subsequently excavated (No. 772, Excavations 2003, 03E1714).
