Topsoil-stripping was monitored at the proposed location of a two-room extension to the existing palliative care unit and the expansion of the attached carpark at Áras Mhuire, Glebe, Tuam, Co. Galway, on 14 August 2003.
The site lies south-west of the main Tuam to Dublin road just south-east of its junction with the Athenry road, in a residential area at the summit of a slight rise. The existing structure is on a flat area enclosed by a low wall. The site is covered with well-tended lawns. As well as Tuam town itself (SMR 43:140), the proposed development is close to SMR 43:80, ecclesiastical remains which lie several hundred metres south.
Two areas were stripped. Area 1, to the rear of the existing structure, measured 12m (north-west/southeast) by 6m. Area 2, north-west of the existing structure, measured 15m (north-east/south-west) by a maximum of 10m.
The geology of the site consisted of a mid- to darkbrown clay loam over a mid-brown to grey glacial till containing a large quantity of angular and subangular limestone gravel.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of monitoring.
