Pre-development testing of the site of a proposed office/apartment was carried out on 30 January 2003, at Piggott’s Street, Loughrea, Co. Galway. The proposed development is within the zone of archaeological potential for Loughrea town (SMR 105:150).
Testing on this 10m by 10m site consisted of the excavation (by machine) of two trenches, which measured 7m long, 0.85–1.3m wide and 0.4–1.6m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of rubble and a rubble wall foundation, above dark-brown friable silt loam and sterile cream/grey firm clay loam (natural subsoil). Modern artefacts were recovered during the testing, associated with the building just demolished on the site.
