The proposed extension to the Loughrea wastewater supply will involve the laying of pipes along the existing roadway between Loughrea and Craughwell. In advance of the pipe-laying within the town of Loughrea, a number of trenches were excavated across the roadways to locate existing services and plan a route for the new pipeline. Seven trenches excavated in the vicinity of the town were monitored. All were excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2m. The stratigraphy encountered generally consisted of the existing road surface overlying hardcore which overlay a light-brown sandy subsoil with frequent small stones. Occasionally a marl or boulder-clay layer was located at the base of the trench. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified in any of the trenches excavated.
