The proposed development concerns an extension to Kilmurvey House, which is located adjacent to Teampall Mac Duach in the south of the island of Inis Mór. Pre-development testing undertaken by Fiona Rooney in 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 744) found that the proposed development would not affect any archaeological layers or features. A condition of planning required that ground disturbance associated with the development be monitored. Monitoring was undertaken on 3 December 2003. The ground disturbance was confined to an area measuring 40m by 8m adjoining the existing dwelling-house. The stratigraphy uncovered consisted of sod overlying a dark-brown sandy clay which extended for 0.35–1m in depth. This layer was loosely compacted and contained moderate amounts of small stones and shell (winkles and limpets). Occasional 20th-century pottery fragments were recovered from the sandy clay. Rock was located directly below it.
