An assessment, which consisted of a site inspection at low tide and a search of easily available desk-based sources, was undertaken in advance of minor works by Galway County Council to the pier at Killeany, on Inis Mór, Aran Islands. A metal-detector survey was attempted but was abandoned due to a high incidence of metal debris in the area.
The historical importance of Killeany Harbour is attested by the constellation of monuments of Early Christian, medieval and post-medieval date in its immediate environs. The sheltered, sandy bay has probably been the main landing place on the island for many centuries. Despite this, the proposed works will have no significant impact on the archaeological resource, as they are confined to the footings of the quay wall, where there are quantities of modern rubbish within mobile silty sand.
