Pre-development testing was undertaken regarding a planning application for a proposed landfill. An assessment had identified two possible sites and testing was to be undertaken in those areas.
Two trenches were manually excavated through the possible enclosure. The stratigraphy revealed in both trenches was similar and consisted of sod and topsoil overlying a well-compacted layer of mid- to dark-brown clay, which in turn overlay a wellcompacted grey layer. The only finds were glass fragments and a 19th-century coin. Ten trenches were mechanically excavated in the vicinity of the possible field system. Four of the trenches comprised sod overlying a peat layer. The trenches which were located on higher ground consisted of sod overlying a stony topsoil, which in turn overlay the natural blue marl. No features of archaeological significance were encountered.
