Monitoring of topsoil-stripping, associated with the first phase of a housing development, was carried out at Kilgarve townland, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, on 15 May and 10 June 2003. The development was located within the constraint of an enclosure (SMR 88:17).
This phase of the development consisted of the stripping of five houses, the main access road and a smaller access road/triangular area adjacent to the five houses. The area stripped for the main access road measured 218.5m long and 7.5–15.5m wide. The area stripped for the five houses measured 54.8m long (east–west) and 17.7m wide. The area stripped for the smaller access road/triangular area to the north of the five houses measured 65.5m north–south and 13–40m wide. The depth of excavation varied from 0.2 to 0.4m.
The stratigraphy encountered consisted of topsoil above orange/brown friable silt loam and grey loose loamy sand. Modern artefacts and occasional oyster shells were recovered.
The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil above natural subsoils. A small area of charcoal found along the smaller access road, measuring 1.4m in diameter, contained no artefacts, nor was it located within a cut or pit. It appeared to have been the remains of a wood or brush fire, possibly the result of field clearance.
