Monitoring was carried out at George’s Square, Headford, Co. Galway, between 17 and 26 February 2003, on land to the rear of the Bank of Ireland, George’s Square. The work will involve the construction of an extension to the bank. The development is close to the medieval town/village of Headford and to Headford Castle.
After demolition of existing buildings and subsequent topsoil-stripping, the subsoil presented as a mid-grey sandy silt directly overlying bedrock. To the south of the site, at the proposed rear yard/parking area, a probable 19th/20th-century drystone well was uncovered. It is proposed that it be covered by a concrete slab and preserved in situ. Nothing further of archaeological significance was observed.
