Monitoring ahead of the construction of drains and services was carried out at McDonagh’s building, Queen Street and Merchants’ Road, Galway, during May and June 2003. The proposed development entails the demolition of existing warehouse buildings and the subsequent construction of apartments and offices. The development is within the zone of archaeological potential for Galway city. Excavations for the service trenches were carried out to a maximum depth of 0.4m. The trenches were excavated along Merchants’ Road, beside the footpath, along the west side of Queen Street and along Dock Road. The stratigraphy was uniform throughout, consisting of tarmacadam and hardcore overlying road-fill material and gravels. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded.
