Monitoring took place in Castlegar, Co. Galway, on 191 Galway Excavations 2003 18 and 19 April 2003. The proposed development involved the insertion of a sewage pipe linking a private dwelling with the main sewer. The sewer was laid along a road known locally as Bóthar na gCoiste. Monitoring was recommended, due to the proposed line of the sewer passing through the area of archaeological potential for Castlegar Castle (SMR 82:21).
A small trench, 0.6–0.7m wide and on average 0.6m deep and 56.3m long, was mechanically excavated. An earlier stone surface below the modern tarmacadam was noted at one point along the trench and a modern telephone cable was revealed towards the north. The underlying limestone bedrock was shown to be very close to the surface along the entire length.
Monitoring of the trench excavation did not reveal anything of archaeological significance.
