A prominent, rounded mound at Carrowkeel lies on the northern margin of the route of the proposed N6 Galway to Ballinasloe road scheme. Test-trenches were opened by hand on the summit, south face and foot of the mound. These found no evidence that the mound was artificial. The landowner said that he had ‘levelled’ the top of the mound some years ago. All in all, the mound appears to be a natural feature and testing suggests that it is of no archaeological significance.

The work was conducted by Galway County Council and was funded by the National Roads Authority under the aegis of the National Development Plan 2002–2006.
