Pre-development testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed hotel on the outskirts of Athenry. Of the eight trenches excavated, three revealed evidence for archaeological activity. Trenches A and B revealed the remains of one human skeleton in situ and a small quantity of fragmented skeletal remains. In Trench D a small deposit of dark-grey clay with charcoal and slag was revealed. The three trenches were located to the east of SMR 84:120 and may be associated with it. As a result of the findings, the position of the proposed carpark was slightly altered. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed in the remainder of the trenches. Subsequent monitoring of topsoil-stripping associated with the hotel site revealed no features of archaeological significance.
