Monitoring of NIE cable trench excavation and pole erection was carried out over a period of four days between 18 and 23 September 2003 at Rossgweer, Co. Fermanagh. The development site is near an Early Christian rath located in improved grassland on top of a prominent ridge overlooking Lower Lough Erne, with good views in all directions. The proposed works consist of the insertion of four electricity poles and associated cable stays and earth cables.
Monitoring was to be carried out during the excavation of both the footing trenches for poles, along with trenches for the associated cable stays and earth cables which would extend from each pole trench. The poles extended in a roughly east–west direction for a total distance of c. 290m, over gentle rising terrain which ascended from east to west.
In all four pole trenches, two cable stay trenches and three earth trenches were excavated using a machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
Monitoring produced no evidence for the existence of archaeological remains in any of the trenches excavated.
