Monitoring focused on previously demolished buildings subject to impact by the current development, the location of which had been ascertained through cartographic sources and previous assessment by Sinéad Phelan (No. 579, Excavations 2003).
The site of Griffith Barracks was originally known as Grimswood Nurseries. The first buildings on-site were those of a remand prison in 1813. In 1835 the prison became the Richmond Pen, a male penitentiary. In 1887 it was transferred to the War Department and expanded to form Wellington Barracks. In 1922 it was renamed Griffith Barracks.
The area identified as the Officers’ Quarters was excavated by machine and two symmetrical buildings, each with an annexe of later date, were recorded. Each consisted of two rooms which had internal dimensions of 6.2m east–west by 4.7m. The foundations of the Officers’ Quarters were cut into natural subsoil, while the artefacts recovered reflect the use of these 19th-century buildings into the later years of the 20th century.
