Monitoring was undertaken at a site at Blessington Road, Tallaght, on 22 July 2003. Planning permission had been granted for the demolition of existing buildings and the erection of a mixed commercial/ student residential development. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for Tallaght (SMR 21:37; 22:18) and is located to the immediate north of an Early Christian church and cemetery. St Mary’s Dominican Priory is located some distance to the east of the proposed development site and this occupies the site of the medieval Archbishop’s Palace.
Monitoring concentrated on the removal of concrete surfaces left after the demolition of preexisting structures and on topsoil-stripping within the areas which remained grassed. One sherd of medieval pottery was found during monitoring. This came from the topsoil within the grassed area of the site. There were no further archaeological artefacts or features identified on the site.
