Testing was undertaken at Greenhills Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24. The proposed development consists of the realignment of Greenhills Road. The proposed section for realignment runs south from the junction with Airton Road junction along the current Greenhills Road to Bancroft Park.
The proposed realignment runs through SMR 21:37 and 22:18, Tallaght village, with twenty potential archaeological sites recognised within that area. The realignment would have a negative impact on four of these sites. Testing was carried out by Teresa Bolger at two of these sites in July 2000 (Excavations 2000, No. 348, 00E0464) and nothing of archaeological significance was identified. A third site, a culvert (Site 4), was surveyed on 5 September 2000, the details of which were included in the testing report.
Testing commenced at the remaining site, a tower-house (SMR 22:18(01)) (Site 1), on 4 March 2003 and lasted for one day. This was carried out using a mechanical digger with a flat, toothless bucket. The trenches show that there has been a lot of relatively modern activity and disturbance on the site. There was no evidence of any remains of the tower-house, Bancroft’s Castle, in any of the trenches.
