Monitoring along the 14km route of Line A (Tallaght to Middle Abbey Street) of the light rail system continued throughout 2003. This resulted in an investigation by Christine Baker of an area along the centre of O’Connell Street in April (No. 561, Excavations 2003, 03E0433).
Construction work involving ground disturbance had practically ceased by the summer of 2003, necessitating less monitoring. Some work was, however, undertaken to the rear of the Four Courts under the 19th-century Chancellery Street, where the foundations of several 18th-century buildings were recorded.
The removal of the taxi ramp at Connolly Station was monitored after the vaults had been surveyed and recorded. No deposits of archaeological significance were recorded underneath.
It is hoped that the results of all investigations will be published in booklet form in the near future.
